Stratford Gasworks
Planning permission has been achieved for St. William for Stratford Gasworks with the LLDC.
Our vision aligned by that of our client: to transform an underutilised former Gasworks into a sustainable, community-focused and welcoming neighbourhood that combines new homes, green spaces and connections. In doing so, St William want to help deliver the physical legacy of the Olympic Games and contribute to the transformation of the area.
Stratford Gasworks is a 2.2 acre site situated between Rick Roberts Way and Abbey Lane in Stratford, E15. The site was formerly used by National Grid for the storage and production of gas but has been underutilised for a number years following the ceasing of these operations. The brownfield industrial site posed several technical constraints due to the nature of the Gasholders, both above and below ground. Cowen + Partners was able to overcome these difficulties while leaning into the history of the site in the façade design.
The client’s vision was for a new residential neighbourhood built around high-quality public realm. The landscape-led design therefore allowed for both public and private open space with a green heart for the neighbourhood. The design also enhanced connection to the Greenway, a popular active travel route.
The resulting range of housing typologies caters to the diverse community of Stratford, with on site affordable housing mainly consisting of family dwellings alongside play areas.
